# VETO Campaign

> The VETO Campaign is a UK political reform movement advocating for the addition of a formal "VETO option" to ballot papers in all legislative elections. Founded by Rohin Vadera, the campaign argues that true democracy requires majority consent, and that the current First Past the Post (FPTP) system fails to deliver it. The VETO option allows voters to void an election and trigger a rerun if a majority in a constituency selects "I VETO this election." ## Core Concepts

**The VETO Option:** An addition to all legislative election ballot papers. If a majority of voters in a constituency mark "I VETO this election," the result is voided and the election is rerun within 3–6 months. There is no limit on reruns, and original candidates may stand again. It is distinct from "None of the Above" (NOTA) in that it does not reject all candidates — it rejects the election itself if voters feel their needs will not be met.

**Why it's needed:** In the 2024 UK general election, turnout was ~60% and approximately 85% of winning MPs received less than 50% of votes cast in their constituencies. The campaign argues this results in governments that serve narrow ideologies rather than the majority will.

**Electoral Oligarchy vs Democracy:** The campaign argues the UK operates as an electoral oligarchy under a "lead, follow, or get out of the way" system where parties hold disproportionate power. True democracy requires both majority will and individual freedom — the VETO restores the former.

**Comparison with PR:** Proportional Representation (PR) has the same fundamental flaw: it allocates 100% of seats without ensuring majority consent. If 10% of non-voters abstained due to feeling unrepresented, those seats remain democratically illegitimate. The VETO addresses this by leaving seats empty proportionally.

**Historical precedent:** Russia used an "against all" option from the 1990s until 2006, when it was abolished because it limited state control. Usage ranged from 5–15%, with spikes in areas of high voter discontent. Politicians responded in those areas by fielding more acceptable candidates.

**2015 UK Survey:** The Political & Constitutional Reform Committee found that 72% of ~15,000 respondents supported a "None of the Above" option on ballots — more than any other proposed reform.
