Adding a VETO option to ballots

The current plan is for the petition to be the focal point of the campaign to maximise the common good. Parliament will deliberate on the VETO option if it receives 100,000 signatures, as it is an official petition. This would give us the opportunity to present this option to backbench MPs. I’m sure there are many who are frustrated with the current system as we are.

We believe that getting signatures on this petition is an essential component of establishing credibility to advocate for and present the concept to a wide range of audiences. We believe we have the best idea in the world to improve everyone’s lot; it just needs to be heard and discussed so people start to understand it and create momentum for implementing this reform.

Additionally, if we gather 100,000 signatures, mainstream media channels might take this reform seriously enough to grant us access to large audiences. Candidates running for office may incorporate it into their manifestos. We have the potential to benefit from a snowball effect once we reach a tipping point, and implementing the VETO will become inevitable.

Petition Overview

Include an option to VETO elections concerning all elected legislative positions

Include the VETO option by the time of the next UK general election. A rerun would be required only if a majority of voters in that constituency, district or county VETO the election. There should be no limits on re-runs or original election candidates standing again.

The electoral system in place is not democratic. It is based on the “lead, follow, or get out of the way,” principle which cannot guarantee majority representation. It prevents voters from self-governance and thereby maximising the common good. The VETO enables voters to reject an election if they believe it will not provide them adequate representation. The veto restores voter sovereignty by requiring majority consent.

A democratic electoral system requires consent, and the veto provides it.
